McDonald & Giles (1971). McDonald & Giles.

Between King Crimson's 1969 Court of the Crimson King album and 1977's first Foreigner album, Ian McDonald made this amazing jazz-rock fusion album with Giles (see also 1968's The Incredible Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp).

Nine Inch Nails (1994). The Downward Spiral.

New Orleanian Trent Reznor wrote one of the greatest songs of all time, "Closer," which is on this CD. I also recommend the 1989 CD Pretty Hate Machine which has my second-favorite NIN song, "Head Like a Hole."

Manfred Mann's Earth Band (1978). The Roaring Silence.

While I recommend any and all post 1960s Manfred Mann (Chapter III, Earth Band), this album has one or two (depending on the version) of the greatest Springsteen covers of all time, "Blinded by the Light" and "Spirits in the Night."

Harry Nilsson (1972). Son of Schmilsson.

The late Harry Nilsson's best, funniest, and most overlooked album. You'll laugh, you'll cry. The rest of his catalog is good, too (1971's Nilsson Schmillson, 1973's A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night), but this one is really special.

Enigma (1990). MCMXC, A.D.

Juxtaposing sexual and sacred imagery, this is an incredibly erotic album. Also from Enigma and recommended, 1994's The Cross of Changes (which includes the song "Silent Warrior") and 1996's Enigma3: Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi!.
